Holker Hall & Gardens
Holker Hall, its gardens and adjacent parkland have been open to the public since the 1950’s. Since then it has developed into one of the principal historic house opening operations in Cumbria, with the gardens winning numerous awards.
The Hall itself boasts a rich and fascinating history, dating back to the early sixteenth century. It combines the elegance and loveliness of the Victorian Era with the warmth and welcome of a much loved family home. Since its construction the Hall has only been home to three families, and has been passed by inheritance through the family line, with each generation leaving its impressions. The most notable example of this was in 1871 when the West Wing caught fire and was completely re-built by William Cavendish, the 7th Duke of Devonshire in a neo-Elizabethan Gothic style.
The formal and woodland gardens at Holker are a living reflection of the imagination, inspiration and dedication of generations of owners and gardeners. They feature many collections of rare and exotic plants and trees that have thrived in the micro-climate of the Cartmel Peninsula, including a 400 year old Great Lime Tree.
Ancillary to the house opening operation is The Holker Courtyard, a piazza style complex which includes the Courtyard Café, the Ilex Bar & Brasserie and the Holker Food Hall which are managed by the Estate. The Food Hall stocks the finest local produce, including Holker’s own seasonal meats and cheeses, produced on the Estate. The Courtyard Cafe serves delicious homemade food, cakes & afternoon teas. The Ilex Bar & Brasserie was developed in 2016 as a joint venture with Northwest based catering company, Rowley and Campbell. The Ilex serves a seasonal British menu of locally sourced produce, including herbs and edible flowers from the Holker Kitchen, inspired by Chef Paul Rowley of Rowley and Campbell. Adjacent to The Courtyard is a Gift Shop, Children’s Adventure playground and picnic area around the landscaped carpark.
The Courtyard area offers a flexible venue for dining, celebrations, weddings and corporate events. Holker Hall & Gardens also has a wedding license and further information about Weddings at Holker can be found on www.holker.co.uk
Holker Hall & Gardens hosts a popular programme of special events throughout the year including Holker Chilli Fest and the Holker Food Markets. The renowned annual Holker Garden Festival also ran for 24 years until 2016.
