The Devonshire Buildings are two imposing historical apartment buildings on Barrow Island in Barrow-in-Furness, owned by Holker Estate.
The Devonshire Buildings were built in the 1870s to house workers at the Devonshire Docks and at the yards of the Barrow Iron Ship Building Company. They were designed by Paley & Austin and are now Grade II* listed. An unusual feature is the octagonal tower at the ends of each block where there was originally a bridge spanning Island Road.
Today, the two buildings comprise spacious accommodation in the form of apartments and have been refurbished to a high standard over a five year programme. The Devonshire Buildings front Michaelson Road, the main thoroughfare to The Waterfront development, and are situated close to BAE Systems. There is a strong sense of community at Devonshire Buildings and around Barrow Island, and the immediate area offers a wide range of facilities for residents.
